Rare early 19th century blue transfer oval footed covered compote or serving bowl by Copeland Spode in the Blue Italian pattern, c. Measures 8″ high to top of handle x 9 1/2″ long handle to handle x 6 1/2 wide. In AS IS condition, note a repair to the lid and a few glaze flakes to the rim, the repaired crack appears to have been glazed over and is starting to peel, difficult to see what is actually the repair and what is the glaze; the base/bowl also has a repair to one side of a handle as well as a spot of glaze loss on the other as shown, no crazing noted, please see all photos. The Blue Italian design was launched by Josiah Spode II in 1816, and this decorative vignette provided the perfect showcase for his father’s revolutionary blue underglaze transfer printing process. It depicts a classic Italianate landscape – although the origins of the scene remain a mystery, as no single place in Italy seems to match the various elements. Nevertheless, it brought huge success for Spode and in the 1930s one catalogue recorded over 700 different items available. A fine addition to any home or collection! All items come from a smoke free home. Please view the total listing as there are more pictures at the bottom of the listing.
